if you can't beat them, teach them

They should teach this back in language classes. Though I understand that it is a trend now to teach the “easiest method” possible for students to absorb a lesson.

But sentence diagramming promotes analytical thinking. Imagine yourself as a word-mechanic, constructing a sound sentence hence it functions properly. It forces you to disassemble the components of a sentence, “evaluate” each part, and then put it all back together. If the components do not fit well, you are immediately assured that you have a problem with your sentence construction.

“There are a few problems that cannot be solved this way, as dire as it may seem.”

Like algebra, it is technique that forces you to use a part of your brain, to make you stop for a millisecond to think.

It forces literacy, to be direct to the point.
